Veggie burger ($11) at Black Iron Tavern
401 N. Milwaukee Ave. 312-690-4000
I’d expect nothing less than perfection from Charlie Trotter protege Michael Taus (Taus Authentic), who's behind this new River West elevated sports bar. While I love a good, sloppy bun-bulging plant-based patty, this is the veggie burger I dream of. The patty, made of soy protein, mushrooms and red peppers and clothed with the smokiest gouda, lettuce and vegan mayo, remains perfectly intact on the pillowy egg-glazed roll. With a side of hand-cut fries and Sriracha mayo, the plate left me in a giddy food stupor that almost softened the strife of my team’s maddening fumbly ball-handling. Almost. I ordered a Penicillin ($10), a classic scotch cocktail with ginger liqueur, lemon juice and honey, for an extra dose of medicine. The bar takes up nearly the entire front room, and there are more than a dozen TVs throughout the place, so on game day, it’s football everywhere you look.

Black Iron Tavern Wants You to Confess Your Sins over Cosmos

Black Iron Tavern Wants You to Confess Your Sins over Cosmos

For a bar with such a heavy-sounding name, Black Iron Tavern (401 N. Milwaukee Ave., West Town, 312-690-4000) is actually quite the relaxed hangout. It’s the kind of place that’s great for just sipping a PBR tallboy and a burger (chef Michael Taus is behind the place, so expect above-average eats), but won’t leave you disappointed if you’re hoping to imbibe something a little more refined.

Make like it’s the early 2000s and order a Cosmo (if there ends up being a resurgence of the cranberry-tinged concoction, you can trace it back to here—it’s been ages since a bar has featured the drink so prominently on its menu) and wander over to the red, London-style phone booth. It’s actually a “confessional booth,” and if you pick up the receiver you can hear secrets recorded and confessed by previous patrons and add your own to the collection.

On the heels of the success of Taus Authentic, chef/owner Michael Taus has opened an inviting tavern in the former The Point space on Milwaukee. The exterior sports a mural depicting the evolution of a man walking into a bar, while the interior comes equipped with plenty of exposed brick and ductwork and a central bar with seating on three sides. Settle in for comforting bar food that spans from Big Jim’s beef chili and carnitas tacos to shareable mac ‘n’ cheese topped with a panko-Romano crust and old-school banana pudding for dessert.
